Parade of Champions

The very first Parade of Champions happened on May 5, 1950 at the Sam Houston Coliseum.  10,000 fans witnessed these matches:
1.      For the Negro Heavyweight Championship: Don Blackman defeated Don Kindred
2.      NWA Texas Tag Team Champions Carlos Moreno & Rito Romero defeated Ruffy Silverstein & Timmy Geohagen
3.      NWA Texas Women’s Champion Nell Stewart defeated Carol Cook (15:00)
4.      “Dangerous” Danny McShain defeated Miguel Guzman to win the NWA Texas Heavyweight Championship.
5.      NWA World Heavyweight Champion Lou Thesz defeated Killer Kowalski in a Best-Two-out-of-Three-Falls match.

Southwest Sports Parade of Champions happened on January 31, 1961 at Texas Stadium.

1.      NWA Texas Brass Knuckles Champion “Wild” Bull Curry defeated Tosh Togo
2.      NWA Texas Tag Team Champions Pepper Gomez & Hogan Wharton defeated Jet Monroe& Sputnik Monroe
3.      NWA Texas Heavyweight Champion Don Manoukian defeated Alex Perez
4.      NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Danny Hodge defeated Jerry Kozak in a Best-Two-out-of-Three-Falls match.
5.      NWA World Heavyweight Champion Pat O’Connor battled Dory Dixon to a 90-minute, time-limit draw in a Best-Two-out-of-Three-Falls match. 

The NWA Western States Parade of Champions happened on January 1, 1970 at the Amarillo Sports Arena.

1.      Jos LeDuc & Paul LeDuc defeated Alex Perez & Chief Little Eagle (6:32)
2.      Dick Murdoch defeated The Lawman to win the NWA Western States Texas Brass Knuckles Championship. (7:31)
3.      NWA Western States Tag Team Champions Ricky Romero & Terry Funk defeated Dusty Rhodes & Gorgeous George, Jr. (11:38)
4.      NWA Western States Heavyweight Champion The Beast defeated Killer Karl Kox by DQ. (11:03)
5.      NWA World Heavyweight Champion Dory Funk, Jr. defeated Rufus R. Jones (49:13)

The NWA Western States Parade of Champions happened on March 27, 1970 at the Taylor County Coliseum in Abilene, Texas.

1.      Gorgeous George, Jr. defeated Bobby Duncum
2.      NWA Western States Tag Team Champions Ricky Romero & Terry Funk defeated Apache Gringo & Bull Ramos
3.      Mr. Wrestling defeated NWA Western States Heavyweight Champion The Beast by DQ.
4.      NWA Texas Brass Knuckles Champion The Lawman defeated Rufus R. Jones
5.      NWA World Heavyweight Champion Dory Funk, Jr. battled Ernie Ladd to a double DQ in a Best-Two-out-of-Three-Falls match.

The Parade of Champions happened on June 24, 1972 at Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas.  At this particular moment in time, professional wrestling was based on a territorial system.  This event was hosted by World Class Championship Wrestling, a member of the National Wrestling Alliance.  26,339 fans (drawing a box office gate of $96,000) witnessed these matches:

 1. El Santo& Jose Lothario beat Terry Funk & Mr. Fuji.
 2. George Scott drew Tommy Siegler.
 3. NWA Midget Champion Lord Littlebrook beat Cowboy Lang.
 4. Mil Mascaras beat The Alaskan.
 5. Bearcat Wright won a seven-man “roulette” match.
 6. Billy Red Lyons beat The Spoiler to win the NWA American Heavyweight Championship.
 7. Stan Stasiak beat Red Bastien to win the World Class Texas Heavyweight Championship.
 8. NWA World Heavyweight Champion Dory Funk, Jr. battled Fritz Von Erich to a 60-minute, time-limit draw.

NWA Big Time Wrestling Parade of Champions happened on March 27, 1974 at the San Antonio Municipal Auditorium.

1.      Bob Roop battled Bull Ramos to a time-limit draw.
2.      Roger Kirby defeated NWA Texas Heavyweight Champion The Great Mephisto by DQ.
3.      Blackjack Lanza & The Texan defeated Black Angus & Ivan Putski
4.      AWA World Tag Team Champions Nick Bockwinkel & Ray Stevens defeated Bob Orton, Jr. & Jose Lothario
5.      NWA World Heavyweight Champion Jack Brisco battled Dory Funk, Jr. to a time-limit draw.  

The next Parade of Champions came 10 years later.  The circumstances behind it have been well-documented over the years.  On February 10, 1984, David Von Erich was found dead in a hotel room in Tokyo, Japan.  He was 25 years old.  The outpouring of love and respect would turn into one of the biggest events in the history of the territory.  The David Von Erich Memorial Parade of Champions was held on May 6, 1984 at Texas Stadium drawing 32,123 fans (a box office gate of $413,000).  The matches went this way:

 1. “Cowboy” Johnny Mantell drew Kelly Kiniski (15:00).
 2. Chris Adams & Sunshine beat Jimmy Garvin& Precious (6:00) when Adams pinned Garvin.
 3. Butch Reed pinned Chic Donovan.
 4. Kamala battled The Great Kabuki to a double DQ (12:00).
 5. Junkyard Dog beat The Missing Link (6:00) via DQ.
 6. Iceman King Parsons & Buck Zumhofe beat The Super Destroyers to win the NWA American Tag Team Championship when Parsons pinned SD #1.
 7. Fritz, Mike, & Kevin Von Erich beat The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy, & Buddy Roberts) to win the World Class Six Man Tag Team Championship when Kevin pinned Roberts.
 8. Kerry Von Erich pinned “Nature Boy” Ric Flair (11:24) to win the NWA World Heavyweight Championship.

    And so, the Parade of Champions would become an annual event for World Class.  The next Parade of Champions happened on May 5, 1985 at Texas Stadium drawing 26,153 fans (a box office gate of $250,000).  The matches went like this:

 1. “Cowboy” Johnny Mantell drew Skip Young.
 2. Scott Casey & Brian Adias beat Kelly & Nick Kiniski.
 3. Terry Gordy beat Kamala via DQ.
 4. Mike Von Erich pinned Rip Oliver.
 5. Chris Adams & Gino Hernandez beat The Great Kabuki & Scott Casey when Adams pinned Casey.
 6. The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton& Tommy Rogers) beat The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton & Dennis Condrey) when Rogers pinned Eaton in a "two ring no DQ" match to win the held-up NWA American Tag Team Championship.
 7. The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes, Terry Gordy,& Buddy Roberts) & Mike, Kevin, & Kerry Von Erich beat Chris Adams, Gino Hernandez, Rip Oliver, Kamala, One Man Gang, & “Dr. Death” Steve Williams in five falls in a "two ring" match.  Adams pinned Roberts.  Hernandez pinned Hayes.  Kerry pinned Oliver.  Roberts pinned Hernandez.  Kevin pinned Williams.
 8. NWA World Heavyweight Champion “Nature Boy” Ric Flair battled Kevin Von Erich to a double countout (22:00).
 9. Kerry Von Erich pinned One Man Gang.  This match was “Kerry’s hair vs. Gary Hart’s hair.”

    On February 18, 1986, World Class left the National Wrestling Alliance and became known as the World Class Wrestling Association.  The last recognized NWA American Heavyweight Champion, the late “Ravishing” Rick Rude, became the first WCWA World Heavyweight Champion.  A few weeks earlier, Gino Hernandez had been found dead at his apartment building in Dallas at the age of 29.  The next Parade of Champions was held on May 4, 1986 at Texas Stadium drawing 24,121 fans (a box office gate of $193,108).  And the matches went like this:

 1. Sunshine pinned Missy Hyatt in a "mud pit" match.
 2. The Great Kabuki pinned Mark Youngblood.
 3. The Great Kabuki pinned Jerry Allen.
 4. Steve Simpson pinned The Great Kabuki.
 5. WCWA Texas Heavyweight Champion Brian Adias pinned “Mr. Electricity” Steve Regal (13:00).
 6. Chris Adams & Brickhouse Brown beat “Hollywood” John Tatum & The Grappler (12:00) when Adams pinned Grappler.
 7. The Missing Link & Iceman King Parsons beat One Man Gang & General Skandor Akbar when Parsons pinned Akbar.
 8. Bruiser Brody pinned Terry Gordy in a "barbed wire" match.
 9. WCWA World Heavyweight Champion Rick Rude beat Bruiser Brody (7:30) via DQ.
10. Steve Simpson, Kerry & Lance Von Erich beat The Fabulous Freebirds (Terry Gordy, Michael Hayes, & Buddy Roberts) in a "lumberjacks with straps elimination" match to win the WCWA World Six Man Tag Team Championship.  Gordy pinned Kerry.  Simpson pinned Hayes.  Roberts pinned Simpson.  Gordy was thrown over the top rope by Lance.  Lance pinned Roberts.

        By 1987, things took a turn for the worse at World Class.  Mike Von Erich was found dead on April 12, 1987 at the age of 23.  The territories were slowly disappearing.  The next Parade of Champions was held on May 3, 1987 at Texas Stadium drawing 5,900 fans (a box office gate of $71,000).  Here is how the event went:

 1. Matt Borne & Steve Casey beat Black Bart& Jack Victory when Borne pinned Bart.
 2. Cousin Junior pinned The Grappler.
 3. Steve Doll beat “Killer” Tim Brooks.
 4. Red River Jack (Bruiser Brody under a mask)& Spike Huber beat Abdullah the Butcher & Eli the Eliminator when Huber pinned Eli.
 5. Red River Jack (Bruiser Brody under a mask) beat “Playboy” Gary Hart via countout.
 6. Mil Mascaras pinned Al Madril.
 7. Skip Young pinned Brian Adias in a "lumberjack" match.
 8. WCWA World Heavyweight Champion Kevin Von Erich battled Nord the Barbarian to a double countout.
 9. The Fantastics (Bobby Fulton& Tommy Rogers)& Steve Simpson beat The Rock-n-Roll RPMs (Tommy Lane & Mike Davis)& Eric Embry in a "scaffold" match.
10. Bruiser Brody pinned Jeep Swenson.
11. Candi Divine won a six woman "mud pit" match.

         The final Parade of Champions under World Class was held on May 8, 1988 at Texas Stadium drawing 7,000 fans (a box office gate of $53,000).  And the matches went like this:

 1. The Missing Link & Jason Sterling beat Vince Apollo & The Angel of Death when Link pinned Apollo.
 2. World Wrestling Association Heavyweight Champion Mike George pinned Jeff Raitz.
 3. Steve Casey pinned Eric Embry.
 4. Black Bart beat Bill Irwin via DQ.
 5. Terry Gordy pinned Michael Hayes in a "triple dome of terror" match.
 6. WCWA Texas Heavyweight Champion Terry Taylor pinned Chris Adams.
 7. Jason Sterling, Steve Casey,& John Tatum won a "triple dome Texas roundup" match.  Also in the match were: Angel of Death, Mike George, Terry Gordy, Michael Hayes, Iceman King Parsons, Buddy Roberts, Shaun Simpson, Jack Victory, and six others.
 8. Bruiser Brody & Kevin Von Erich beat Buddy Roberts and a masked mystery partner (Solomon Grundy) (6:00) when Kevin pinned Roberts.
 9. WCWA Texas Tag Team Champions John Tatum & Jack Victory beat Terry Gordy & Steve Simpson via countout to win the Wild West Wrestling Tag Team Championship.
10. Kerry Von Erich pinned Iceman King Parsons to win the WCWA World Heavyweight Championship.

    NWA Southwest hosted the Parade of Champions as the Bronco Bowl on June 10, 1999 in Dallas and the match results were:

1.      Cedric of Hollywood defeated Mike Foxx
2.      Action Jackson defeated El Gato Negro
3.      Terry Gordy defeated The New Dr. X
4.      Jimmy James defeated Canyon to win the NWA Texas Hardcore Championship.
5.      Kevin Northcutt defeated “Redd Dogg” Rodney Mack to win the vacant NWA Texas Heavyweight Championship.
6.      NWA World Tag Team Champions Knuckles Nelson & Rick Fuller defeated Team Extreme: Khris Germany & Kit Carson.  

NWA Southwest hosted the Parade of Champions event on April 14, 2000 at the Texas Indoor Arena in North Richland Hills, Texas.

1. Kevin Duncan defeated Samir
2. NWA Texas Junior Heavyweight Champion Zane Morris defeated Seth Shai
3. NWA Texas Heavyweight Champion Mike Foxx defeated Rodney Mack
4. Kevin Northcutt defeated Don Brodie to win the NWA National Heavyweight Championship.
5. The Rebellion: Tejas & Kurt Reigns defeated Action Jackson
6. Abdullah the Butcher defeated Necro Butcher to win the NWA Texas Hardcore Championship.   

NWA Southwest hosted the Parade of Champions event on August 14, 2010 at the Gainesville High School.  The card went like this:

1.      NWA Oklahoma Heavyweight Champion Dane Griffin defeated Spoiler 2000 by DQ.
2.      Doink the Clown defeated Tom Donovan.
3.      Michael Faith defeated Chad Thomas to win the NWA Texas Heavyweight Championship.
4.      NWA Texas Tag Team Champions Pretty Flawless (Jerome Daniels & Nobe Bryant) defeated Aerial Assault: Ky-ote and Montego Seeka.
5.      Kevin Douglas defeated Andromeda, Andy Dalton, & Gabe the Babe in a Four Way match to win the NWA Texas Junior Heavyweight Championship.
6.      NWA World Heavyweight Champion Adam Pearce battled Charlie Haas to a double countout.
   
    NWA Smoky Mountain hosted the Parade of Champions on February 18, 2012 at the Carver Recreation Center in Johnson City, Tennessee.

1.      SSW Heavyweight Champion Frank Parker defeated Lukas Angel
2.      NWA Tennessee Heavyweight Champion Derek Neal defeated Jeff Connelly
3.      NWA Smoky Mountain Tag Team Champions Keith Knox & Wayne Adkins defeated Bryan Kyle & Derik Billings by DQ.
4.      NWA Smoky Mountain Heavyweight Champion Jason Kincaid defeated Shawn Shultz
5.      PWF Tag Team Champions Beau James & Josh Crawford defeated The Illuminati: Chris Richards & Tony Givens
6.      NWA Women’s World Champion Tasha Simone defeated Misty James
7.      Team NWA Smoky Mountain: Chase Owens, Menace, & Sigmon defeated Team Ambition: Davey Richards, Kyle O’Reilly,& Tony Kozina     

    NWA Houston hosted the Parade of Champions event on April 20, 2013 at the Houston Athletic Fencing Center as a tribute to the late promoter Paul Boesch.  The card was a stellar event with these matches:

1.      David Duperon & Jasper Davis defeated Jack Jameson & Rudy Russo (9:41)
2.      Tokyo Monster Kahagas defeated “Big Daddy Yum-Yum” Byron Wilcott to win the NWA North American Heavyweight Championship.
3.      Raymond Rowe defeated Mike Dell to win the NWA Lone Star Junior Heavyweight Championship. (12:49)
4.      NWA National Heavyweight Champion Damien Wayne defeated Houston Carson. (12:05)
5.      NWA Lone Star Heavyweight Champion Jax Dane defeated Lance Erikson (7:27)
6.      New Japan Pro Wrestling’s IWGP (International Wrestling Grand Prix) Tag Team Champions The Killer Elite Squad: Lance Archer & Davey Boy Smith, Jr. defeated The Kingz of the Underground: Ryan Genesis & Scot Summers to win the NWA World Tag Team Championship.  (23:00)
7.      NWA World Heavyweight Champion Rob Conway defeated Chris Masters.  (19:47)

    Pro Wrestling Syndicate hosted the Parade of Champions on March 28, 2015 at the Rec Center in Rahway, New Jersey.

1.      Shynron defeated Devon Moore
2.      Habib from the Car Wash defeated Bobby Wayward, Craven Varro, Matt Macintosh, Starman, & The Drunken Swashbuckler to win the PWS Suicidal Six Way Championship in a Ladder match.
3.      Delroy defeated Todo Loco
4.      Eddie Kingston defeated Kevin Matthews in a Falls Count Anywhere match.
5.      PWS Tag Team Champions Gregory Iron& Zach Gowen defeated Alex Reynolds & Kyle Reynolds, The Heavenly Bodies: Desirable Dustin & Gigolo Justin, and Team Espana: Jos A & Jos B in a Four Team Gauntlet match.
6.      Mario Bokara defeated Fallah and Dan Maff to win the PWS Heavyweight Championship in a Three Way, No DQ match.   
   
    On Thursday, March 31, 2016, the National Wrestling Alliance will once again host the Parade of Champions at the historic Ridglea Theater in Fort Worth, Texas.
